updated 02/06/02 OBTAINING A PERMIT TO CONSTRUCT OR DEEPEN A WATER WELL Anyone wishing to construct or deepen water well must obtain a permit from the Logan County Health Department. The permit fee is required at the time the permit is issued. Water wells must be constructed in accordance with the Illinois Water Well Construction Code. Outlined below are steps to take in obtaining a water well permit. 1. Contact a State of Illinois Water Well Contractor. Contact the Health Department for a list of contractors or check the yellow pages. 2. Submit a completed application. The well contractor or the property owner can submit the application. The application must be accompanied by a sketch with the location of the new well, location of existing well, if applicable, and any sources of contamination such as a septic tank or seepage field, abandoned well, barnyard or manure piles. Distances between the new well, existing well and sources of contamination must be documented on the sketch. 3. Upon approval of the application, construction can begin. 4. Once the well is completed, the Logan County Health Department will draw a water sample. The Illinois Department of Public Health laboratory will perform analysis. The sample will be analyzed for coliform bacteria and nitrates.
