OBTAINING A PERMIT TO INSTALL, REPAIR OR

MODIFY A PRIVATE SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM

Anyone wishing to install, repair or modify a private sewage disposal system, including tank replacement, must obtain a permit from Logan County Health Department before construction begins. A permit fee is required. Systems must be installed in accordance with the Illinois Private Sewage Disposal Act and Code.

Outlined below are steps to take in obtaining a private sewage disposal permit.

1. Contact a State of Illinois licensed septic installation contractor. A list of local contractors is available at the health department or check the yellow pages.

2. Percolation test or soils analysis must be performed in order to determine the size of the seepage field. The number of bedrooms in the home and whether the home is served by a garbage grinder or not are used to determine the size of the septic tank and seepage field. After this information is determined, you or your contractor will submit a plan review application to our office. Once the plan is approved and the permit fee is paid, a permit to construct is issued.

3. An inspection by the health department will be conducted before the system is backfilled. Schedule your inspection at least 48 hours before your anticipated completion date.
